Project: Espaço Galeria SESI-SP
Curated by Diego Mauro
The exhibition Reflexos do Unimaginável: através do vidro tudo acontece offers an immersion into the creative universe of Debora Muszkat, an artist who, since the 1980s, has mobilized participatory processes in the transformation of discarded materials into works that provoke our relationships with the environment and our ways of being in the world. Her practice mobilizes themes such as sustainability and respect for Brazil’s cultural and natural diversity, connecting artistic creation to precepts of the circular economy. Using various media such as drawing, painting, sculpture and installations, Debora uses glass as the central material of her poetry. By creating visual narratives through waste, Debora casts new perspectives on the cycles of consumption and disposal, proposing dialogues between artistic creation and global ecological challenges.
The exhibition is composed of three site-specific installations that establish an introspective and contemplative ambiance. Here, reused materials worked by many hands take the form of natural elements and address the impacts of consumption cycles on our ways of being in the world.
The artist
Debora Muszkat
Visual artist and art educator. She expresses herself through various artistic techniques: drawing, painting, sculpture and is the author of several installations. Throughout her career, she has chosen glass as her main work material, accumulating more than 32 years of experience and research in glass art. Debora has developed and coordinated several art education projects for low-income populations, street artists, sheltered youth and the elderly in partnership with various institutions and communities, such as: Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (2001 to 2008), Cidade Escola Aprendiz, Paço das Artes and Unibes Cultural. Along with her passion for glass, recycling is another theme that drives her work: all of her works are made with discarded glass in a process in which art and sustainability are inseparable. And it is to the importance of this reflection that she draws attention in her works. Debora has participated in several exhibitions throughout Brazil: shows at MAC, MAM, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Pinacoteca do Estado; and abroad in several biennials in Europe. She created the Debora Muszkat Institute, which brings to the public a physical space transformed since 2011 into a large glass installation. The Institute will carry out actions developed and based on three pillars: Art, Education and Sustainability.
